U.S. filmmakers in general, and U.S. Independent filmmakers in particular, have benefited from fifteen years of advances in production and distribution technology, and from the increasing transparency of borders when it comes to global consumption of American movies. Emerging technologies, such as the internet, DVD (Digital Versatile Disk) and VOD (Video on Demand), and the expansion of global markets, such as the explosive growth of theaters in Asia and parts of Europe, as well as the expansion of satellite and other television delivery systems, seem to predict new areas of growth for delivery of movies to awaiting audiences.
Filmmakers who understand how to plan for and approach the broadest range of possible markets will have an edge in the pursuit of their businesses. For example, a film such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding, produced for $5 million, after being turned down by all the studios, went on to achieve nearly $360 million in worldwide box office. And Cabin Fever, an independent film created outside the studio system for $1.5 million, and when picked up by Lions Gate went on to a global income approximating more than $57 million, proving that negative cost (cost of producing a film “negative” from which positive “prints” will be copied) is not the key factor in gaining audience interest. Likewise, even a film such as Tadpole, which was produced for only $160,000 negative cost, was able to gain an estimated $5 million in a rights sale to Miramax. It has become clear, then, that a producer with a well-thought-out business plan has a shot at success.
And the private and independent investors are the ones reaping all the financial benefits.
